The Boomtown Rats Bio

The Boomtown Rats is an Irish rock band that was formed in 1975 in Dun Laoghaire, near Dublin, Ireland. The founding members of the band were Bob Geldof (frontman & vocalist), Johnnie Fingers (keyboards), Gerry Cott (guitar), Garry Roberts (lead guitar), Pete Briquette (bass), and Simo Crowe (drums). The borrowed the name from Woody Guthrie’s novel Bound for Glory.

The band dropped their debut full length album The Boomtown Rats in 1997 while their sophomore Tonic for the Troops followed in June the next year with their first Top Ten hit Like Clockwork. The albums Rat Trap hit #1 in the fall. Some of their known singles include Dave / Hard Times (1984), A Hold of Me/Never in a Million Years (1985) and Rain/An Icicle in the Sun (1985). They appeared on Kirsty MacColl’s 1979 single You Caught Me Out.
