The Chieftains Bio
The Chieftains is an Irish folk band that was formed in 1962 in Dublin, Ireland. The band was formed by Paddy Moloney when he came out of Ceoltoiri Chualann to found the Chieftains.
The band released their first four albums over a period between 1965 to 1973 and were originally available from the Claddagh label in Ireland. The albums were later picked up and released in England and America in 1976 by Island Records. The band’s big breakthrough in America occurred when they provided the music for the Stanley Kubrick 1975 movie Barry Lyndon. Their track Women of Ireland was getting played heavily on FM radio stations and the track broke into some Top 40 Stations. The band got hot in America and toured extensively. Their album Chieftains 5 was released by Island Records, and thanks to their newfound audience, they came out more frequently releasing Bonaparte's Retreat in 1976, Chieftains Live in 1977, and Chieftains 7, 8, and 9 in 1978, 1979, and 1980, respectively.
Their album SanPatricio was a worldwide acclaim when it appeared in 2010. The group celebrated their 50th anniversary with Voice of Ages released in February 2012 on Concord.
