The Darkness Bio

The Darkness is a British rock band formed in 2000 from Lowestoft, Suffolk. Members include: Justin Hawkins (lead vocals, guitar), his brother Dan Hawkins (guitar, backing vocals), Frankie Poullain (bass, backing vocals) and Rufus Taylor (drums, son of Queen drummer Roger Taylor). The band gained worldwide popularity in 2003 with the release of their debut album Permission to Land. This album features mega-hit “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” along with several other popular singles, like “Love is Only a Feeling,” “Get Your Hands Off My Woman,” and “Growing on Me.”

With the immense popularity of “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” Permission to Land became certified quadruple-platinum in the UK, with record sales of over 1,300,000. The album also garnered The Darkness critical acclaim, as it won three Brit Awards in 2004: Best British Group, Best British Rock Act, and Best British Album. In total, The Darkness has won 22 awards throughout the course of its career.

Its second studio album, One Way Ticket to Hell…And Back was released in 2005 to mixed reviews. Following this, the band took a six year hiatus, returning in 2011 with all four original members. Their third album, Hot Cakes, was released in 2012.
