The Beat is a band founded before the days of Google, so their name becomes modernized as “The English Beat” in the US and “The British Beat” in Australia. Dating from the late 1970s, they are a 2tone/ska band, with line-up shuffles that caused the band to be re-named “The English Beat starring Dave Wakeling” and then ”The Beat featuring Ranking Roger” and “The New English Beat featuring Ranking Roger.”
Despite the fuss over naming, only the first few albums of The Beat, being “I Just Can’t Stop It” (1980), “Wha’ppen?” (1981), and “What Is Beat?” (1983), charted or got certified gold or silver. Later years saw two different band leaders split the band into two different touring versions, perhaps a spectacle in and of itself.
