The Fall were an English alternative punk rock band. They were formed in 1976 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, U.K. Their name comes after the novel of the same name by Albert Camus. The band underwent many line-up changes and the only constant member was Mark E. Smith, the founder, and vocalist. Other long-term members of the band were drummers Paul Hanley and Karl Burns, bassist Steve Hanley, and guitarist Marc Riley and Brix Smith. The Fall has cited as their musical influences bands like Can, The Velvet Underground, and The Monks. They have been cited as one the most prolific British post-punk bands ever, with more than 32 studio albums released from 1976 to 2017. The Fall have influenced several artists like Sonic Youth, Steve Albini and The Pixies, among many others. The death of Smith in 2018 effectively put an end to the group.
