The Jesus and Mary Chain is a Scottish alternative rock band that was formed in 1984. Their ground-breaking debut album, Psychocandy (1985), combined upbeat power-pop melodies with feedback-distorted guitar playing and the monotony of melancholy lyrics. William Reid, his brother Jim Reid, Douglas Hart, and Murray Dalglish were the band's founding members. Ben Lurie, Bobby Gillespie, John Moore, and Steve Monti were some of the later members of the band. The Jesus and Mary Chain created a hybrid genre that was much celebrated by critics, and influenced numerous noise-pop bands, but they were only marginally successful commercially. The Velvet Underground, the Sex Pistols, the Beach Boys, and the pop music Phil Spector made in the 1960s all had a big impact on the Jesus and Mary Chain.
