The Mars Volta is a progressive rock band that came into the fore at the beginning of the 21st century, and made an instant connection with Millennials, a fan base which has carried it ever since. Due to creative differences, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López quit their previous band, At the Drive-In. Starting a new project, drummer Blake Fleming and producer Alex Newport joined with Cedric and Omar to produce the first demo tape of what would become The Mars Volta in 2002. After a brief tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, they signed a contract with Universal.
The Mars Volta has become one of the most venerated bands in 21st century prog-rock, winning the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Vanguard Award in 2004, and a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2009. They’ve released six studio albums as of this writing, several certified silver and gold and their 2005 “The Widow” placing #7 on the Billboard US Alternative chart. They appeared in the 2009 documentary “All Tomorrow’s Parties.” Artists such as Neil Peart of the band Rush and James Hetfield of the band Metallica have cited them as an influence.
