The Roots Bio

Formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1987, The Roots are known for their ne soul take on hip-hop. While in high school, founding members Ahmir Thompson, known as Questlove, and Tariq Trotter, known as Black Thought, got together and began performing under the name Radio Activity, which was changed to The Square Roots before they landed upon The Roots. They released their debut album Organix in 1993, and after signing with DGC/Geffen Records, they released the album Do You Want More?!!!??! in 1994. Their first Top 40 album, however, was the 1996 record Illadelph Halflife, lead by the Top 40 hit “What They Do”. They followed this success with their breakthrough Things Fall Apart in 1999, which was made popular largely due to the song “You Got Me”. The single won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

In their career, The Roots would take on Malik B., Leonard Hubbard – known as “Hub” – and Josh Abrams. Throughout their career, The Roots would experience a number of lineup changes, and would release Phrenology in 2002, The Tipping Point in 2004, Game Theory in 2006, Rising Down in 2008, How I Got Over in 2010, Undun in 2011, and …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin in 2014. The Roots also released a collaboration album with John Legend titled Wake Up! in 2010. They are recognized as being one of the 25 greatest hip-hop groups of all time.
