Coming from Chicago, Illinois, Smashing Pumpkins was formed in 1988. Lead guitarist and songwriter Billy Corgan played amalgam progressive rock mixed with heavy metal, pop, and psychedelia. With this kind of music, Smashing Pumpkins became a standard for alternative rock music. The band achieved mass success with the release of their 1993’s Siamese Dream.
Dating back to 1990, the band released “I Am One” as their debut single under the Limited Potential label, which instantly sold out. Then they released “Tristessa” on Sub Pop the same year. Under Virgin Records, they agreed to release their debut album under its subsidiary Caroline. “Gish” became a big hit in the spring of 1991.
