The Toy Dolls Bio

The quartet known as The Toy Dolls were formed in 1979 by Peter Robson as lead vocalist, Michael Algar on guitar, Philip Dugdale on bass guitar, and Colin Scott on drums. They first performed together in October of that year at the Millview Social Club in Sunderland, North East England. Robson, who was known by his stage name of Pete Zulu, left shortly after the formation, and was replaced by Paul Hudson, who also did not last long. It was at that time that Michael Algar, stage name “Olga”, decided to remake the Toy Dolls into a trio.

For their first ever single, “Tommy Kowey’s Car”, they had only 500 copies pressed, yet once those sold out, they never made any more. After changing members on a very frequent basis, the band finally released an EP, the Toy Dolls EP. They were signed to EMI Records for a brief time, later moving to Volume Records which helped them release three albums in a span of one year. Their breakout year, however, is said to be 1982, when they released their single “Nellie the Elephant”, and after they put out the second version of that song, the single shot to #4 on the U.K. charts and sold more than 530,000 copies. The band changed hands and members yet again, ending with founding member Olga going off to pursue playing with other bands. They did nevertheless release an album in 2004 entitled Our Last Album.
