Toots and the Maytals is a Jamaican band formed in 1962. Known for being one of the best early reggae groups, they became one of the most popular acts in Jamaica through its frontman Toots Hibbert’s incredible vocals and through iconic hits like Pressure Drop (1968), Sweet and Dandy (1968), and 54-46 (That’s My Number) (1968). They made their first dent on the charts working with Coxsone Dodd and In 1966, they won the first Jamaican Independence Festival Popular Song Competition with Bam Bam. Later that year, the group’s activities were halted due to Hibbert being arrested for possession of marijuana. After that, the group worked with Leslie Kong, releasing a song entitled Do the Reggay, which gave reggae, a then-developing genre, its name. In 1980, they recorded and released the album Toots Live within 24 hours in order to make the Guinness Book of World Records.
