Tortoise is a music group from Chicago, Illinois. The group was formed in 1990, and its members include keyboardist/drummer John Herndon, bassist/guitarist John McEntire, bassist/percussionist Dan Bitney, and guitarist/bassist Jeff Parker. Most of its members were playing in other bands before joining Tortoise. The band signed with the Thrill Jockey label in 1993 and released their eponymous debut the following year. In 1995, they released a remix album titled "Rhythms, Resolutions & Clusters.”
Their breakthrough came in 1996 when they released their second album, titled “Millions Now Living Will Never Die.” The following year, they went on their biggest tour today, performing in the USA, Japan and Europe. In 1998, they released a new album titled “TNT,” followed by “Standards” in 2001, “It’s All Around” in 2004, and “Beacons of Ancestorship” in 2009. Their most recent album, “The Catastrophist” was released in 2016.
