The brainchild of singer Pat Monahan, Train formed in 1994 when Monahan joined with Rob Hotchkiss, guitarist Jim Stafford, bassist Charlie Colin, and drummer Scott Underwood. Though Monahan is from Erie, PA, he relocated to California, where the band concentrated most of their energy in performing. They gained some recognition when they opened for bands such as Barenaked Ladies and Counting Crows, which allowed them to gain enough money to begin recording an album. They debuted with Train in 1998, and their single “Meet Virginia” was a Top 40 hit. Yet in 2001, they released their second album Drops of Jupiter, whose single with the same name brought them tremendous fame. The album sold over 3 million copies, and the song spent more than 40 weeks on the Top 40 chart.
The group would go on to record and release four more albums: My Private Nation in 2003, which went Platinum, For Me, It’s You in 2006, Save Me, San Francisco in 2009, and California 37 in 2012. Their album Save Me, San Francisco, is said to have done just that to the band thanks to their extremely successful single “Hey, Soul Sister”, which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group has sold more than 4 million albums to date in the United States alone.
