VanJess is a soul & R&B duo formed by sisters, Ivana and Jessica Nwokike. The two sisters are of Nigerian descent and were raised in both Nigeria and California but are currently based in California. Ivana and Jessica began their music on YouTube in 2008 where they caught the attention of the public with their YouTube song covers, specifically their Drake cover of his song ‘Headlines’. Throughout their time as rising YouTube sensations, VanJess released a few singles in 2016, collaborating with popular artists such as ‘Touch the Floor’ featuring Masego and ‘Through Enough’ featuring GoldLink, which later made their debut album. In 2018, VanJess was signed to RCA Records joint venture with Keep Cool. In the same year, they released their debut album, ‘Silk Canvas’, featuring their previous collaborations with Masego and GoldLink. The album received praise from Vogue, Noisey by Vice, OkayAfrica, Fact Mag and Pitchfork. “Silk Canvas, is exactly as written… The album is a smooth, cohesive and feel-good listen, bringing you all the groovy feels of the ‘90s” as said by Vogue. The success of the album led to a remix album that was released in 2019, featuring R&B artists such as Saba, Bas, Little Simz, Ari Lennox and Xavier Omar. Their effortless vocals and sultry R&B 90’s sound on their debut album have accumulated 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Their most recent collaboration in 2019 with DJ and producer KAYTRANADA, ‘DYSFUNCTIONAL’ has received 13 million plays on Spotify. They also feature on his album, ‘BUBBA’ on the track, ‘Taste’.
