Vasyl Lomachenko was born in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Ukraine on February 17, 1988.
As an amateur boxer, he won two gold medals at the Olympic Games – one in Beijing in the featherweight division in 2008 and another one in lightweight category in London in 2012. He won two gold medals and one silver medal at the World Championships. He had also bagged won several international competitions such as the European Championships, the Junior World Championships, and the Cadet European Championships.
In 2013, he won WBO International Featherweight Title. In 2014, he won the vacant WBO World Featherweight Title. He defeated Roman Martinez and won the World Boxing Organisation World Super Featherweight Title in 2016. In May 2018, he won the World Boxing Association Super World Lightweight Title against Jorge Linares.
