Rapper Vic Mensa was born Victor Kwesi Mensah on June 6, 1993, to a Ghanian father and a Caucasian mother. He shortened his name when he began performing, and was initially influenced by the early rock and roll of Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles. It was during his middle school years that he was attracted to the sound of hip-hop and rap. In 2010, Vic Mensa released Straight Up, which gained him a substantial Internet following. During that time, Vic Mensa was also making music with the group Kids These Days, which disbanded in 2013. That year, Vic Mensa released his second mixtape INNANETAPE, on which appears rappers Ab-Soul, Chance the Rapper, and Thundercat, among others.
In 2013, Vic Mensa toured alongside J. Cole and Wale on their What Dreams May Come tour, and the next year, he was featured on the cover of XXL Magazine as part of their Freshman Class of 2014. He released the single “Down on My Luck” in the spring of 2014, which was the first single made available from his debut EP Street Lights.
