Yana Kunitskaya was born on November 11, 1989, in Murmansk, Murmansk Oblast, Russia's northern region. At the age of 12, she began engaging in hand-to-hand combat, participating in a considerable number of matches without losing. Kunitskaya moved to St. Petersburg when she was 16 years old to live and study. She began training in mixed martial arts when she was 18 years old. She declared the end of her athletic career and switched to coaching in August 2013, although she came out of retirement three years later. She then accepted a deal with the Invicta Fighting Championships (IFC or Invicta FC), a female-only MMA organization.
