Viggo Mortensen was born on October 20, 1958 in New York City, New York. His first film appearance was in Witness in 1985. He later starred in Search for Tomorrow, Bent and Miami Vice. Throughout the 1990s, Mortensen starred in The Portrait of a Lady, Prison, The Indian Runner, The Young Americans, G.I. Jane, 28 Days and American Yakuza, among others. He starred as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which made him an international star. He starred in Hildago in 2004 and in 2005 landed the role in A History of Violence. He later starred in Eastern Promises, winning a British Independent Film award and being nominated for an Academy Award.
Mortensen returned to theater in 2011 in the film Purgatorio. He also founded a publishing house called Perceval Press.
