LL Cool J Bio

LL Cool J, born James Todd Smith, is a rapper and actor from Queens, New York. He got an early start, signing to Def Jam at age sixteen with the release of his debut single, “I Need A Beat.” The song sold over 100,000 copies, which launching both LL Cool J, and the then-fledgling label Def Jam. LL Cool J released his debut album, Radio, in 1985 to universal acclaim and commercial success. The album became a defining record of “New School” hip hop, and is generally regarded as his best work. It was certified Platinum by the RIAA within four years, and helped launch the career of legendary producer Rick Rubin. His second album, Bigger and Deffer, was released two years later to even greater sales. Though lacking the universal critical acclaim of his debut, the album remains an influential record featuring the first successful ballad to come from the genre, “I Need Love.” LL Cool J has remained active, releasing 11 albums since Bigger and Deffer, with the most recent Authentic finding release in 2013.
