Internationally renowned hip hop artist and actor Common was born Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr. in Chicago, Illinois, on March 13, 1972. In 1992, he released the single “Take It EZ”, which preceded his debut album Can I Borrow a Dolloar? that same year. At the time, however, he was performing under the name Common Sense. His fame only increased when, in 1994, he released his album Resurrection, but shortly thereafter he was forced to shorten his name to Common after a dispute with another group who performed under the moniker Common Sense. His third album, One Day It’ll All Make Sense, featured artists such as De La Soul, Lauryn Hill, and Q-Tip. Common would go on to release the albums Like Water for Chocolate in 2000, Electric Circus in 2002, Be in 2005, Finding Forever in 2007, Universal Mind Control in 2008, The Dreamer/The Believer in 2011, and Nobody’s Smiling in 2014. In addition to a successful singing career, he acted in the movies Smokin’ Aces, American Gangster, and in Date Night.
