Formed in 1985, Salt-N-Pepa is an all-girls hop hop ground made up of DJ Spinderella (Deidra Roper, born in 1971, New York,) and of course Salt (Cheryl James, born in 1966, New York,) and Pepa (Sandra Denton, born in 1969, Jamaica). Their 1987 song “Push It” got the group recognized and even nominated for a Grammy. They have released the following studio albums, “Hot, Cool & Vicious” (1986), “A Salt with a Deadly Pepa” (1988), “Blacks’ Magic” (1990), “Very Necessary” (1993), and “Brand New” (1997). Salt-N-Pepa has been associated with Red Ant, Pop Art, Next Plateau, FFRR, and London/PolyGram record labels. The group is known for breaking gender barriers in the world of hip hop and has sold more than 15-million records to date.
