Amythyst Kiah was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States. Influenced by her parent’s diverse music taste and the rock tracks on MTV in her day, she started playing guitar in high school. She studied in the Bluegrass Program at the East Tennessee State University where she also learned how to play the banjo.
Dig, her debut album was independently released by her in 2012. The album’s success would allow her to tour several states in the coming years. She released an EP Amythyst Kiah & Her Chest of Glass in 2016 with her backing band, and her second album Wary + Strange came in 2021 produced by Tony Berg and issued by the Rounder label.
When Giddens approached her to join the ground Our Native Daughters, she jumped on board. Their 2019 release Songs of Our Native Daughters blew up and was also nominated for the Grammy Award. It also earned the Song of the Year honor and the Folk Alliance International Awards.
