AZ Bio

Rapper AZ was born Anthony Cruz on March 9, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York. He is known for his frequent work with Nas and is also a member of the hip hop group The Firm along with Nas, Foxy Brown, Cormega and Nature. He first appeared on the track “Life’s a Bitch” from Nas’ 1994 album Illmatic. In 1995, AZ signed to EMI records and released his first album, Doe or Die, which received critical praise but little commercial success, yet its lead single, “Sugar Hill”, reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. He released one album with The Firm, titled The Album, before the group disbanded. AZ followed this up with the albums Pieces of a Man (1998) and 9 Lives (2001.)

In 2002, AZ released Aziatic. The album contained a duet with Nas titled “The Essence”, which was nominated for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group at the 2003 Grammy Awards. He went on to release four albums over the next four years, A.W.O.L (2005), The Format (2006), Undeniable (2008) and Legendary (2009.) In 2009, AZ also began work on his ninth studio album, Doe or Die II, which was said to feature collaborations with his longtime mentor Nas as well as L.E.S., DR Period, Pete Rock & Buckwild, yet as of October of 2014, the album has not been released.
