Charles Lloyd Bio

Charles Lloyd is a jazz musician born on 15th March 1938 in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. He is widely known for playing the tenor saxophone, although he also plays other instruments. He has been a member of a quartet alongside Jason Moran (piano), Eric Harland (drums), and Reuben Rogers (acoustic bass) since 2007. Lloyd was exposed to music at a young age. He later studied music in college before starting his career as a musician. He landed his first role as music director of Chico Hamilton’s music group.

In 1964, he joined the sextet Cannonball Adderley, where he played with Louis Hayes, Nat Adderley, Sam Jones, and Joe Zawinul. They released a live album, titled “Forest Flower” that same year. They toured extensively in Europe and the United States. In 1967, Lloyd was named DownBeat Magazine’s Jazz Artist of the Year. In the 1970s, he played with The Beach Boys. In 1989, he recorded the album “Fish Out of Water” under the ECM Records. He went on to release the albums “Voice in the Night”, “Lift Every Voice”, “Rabo de Nube”, and others.
