Da Brat Bio

One of the first female MCs to make a name for herself, Da Brat was born Shawntae Harris in Joliet, Illinois, on April 14, 1974. After winning a rap contest in her town that was sponsored by Yo! MTV Raps, she was able to meet Kris Kross and then Jermaine Dupri, who quickly signed her to So So Def. She released her debut album Funkdafied in 1994, which went to #1 on the rap albums chart and was then certified Platinum. Her single “Give It 2 You” went to #26 on the Hot 100 chart. She would then release the album Anuthatantrum, featuring the single “Ghetto Love” with T-Boz.

Da Brat would spend the remainder of the 1990s lending guest vocals to other artists’ tracks, including the remix of “Always Be My Baby” by Mariah Carey, “Sock It 2 Me” by Missy Elliott, and the remix of “Jumpin’, Jumpin’” by Destiny’s Child. The year 2000 saw the release of her album Unrestricted, followed by Limelite, Luv & Nightclubz in 2003. Da Brat later appeared as a guest during a few shows of Mariah Carey’s tour in 2006, lending rap vocals to the songs “Heartbreaker” and “Honey”.
