Damien Rice was born on December 7, 1973 in Celbridge, County Kildare. He began his music career as lead singer of Juniper, a rock band which released two singles and got plenty of airplay on Irish radio. When record company politics got in the way of Juniper’s first album, Rice split from the group. He traveled around Europe for a while and then he returned to Ireland and released his debut album O in 2002, dedicated to a friend who died of a head injury. The album reached number 8 on the UK albums chart and contained the top 40 hit The Blower’s Daughter, which featured in the Oscar-nominated movie Closer. He has since released two other albums, 9 (2006) and My Favourite Faded Fantasy (2014). He has also contributed to numerous charity projects and won the third annual Shortlist Music Prize in 2003.
