Canadian R&B singer Deborah Cox was born on July 13, 1974, in Toronto. She lent her voice to various commercials starting at the age of 12, and was also heavily into performing at talent shows. She worked as a backup singer for Celine Dion in the early 1990s, and shortly after, moved to Los Angeles so that she could find a record label to sign her. Arista Records picked her up in 1995, and that year, Deborah Cox released her debut self-titled album. Though she did not achieve the level of success she had wanted, Deborah Cox forged on and released her second album One Wish, which featured the immensely popular single “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here”. The song shot to #1 on the Hot R&B charts in the U.S., where it remained for fourteen weeks straight. One Wish went Platinum, and is counted as her most successful endeavor.
Deborah Cox went on to release The Morning After in 2002, Destination Moon in 2007, and The Promise in 2008, which sold thousands of copies in the U.S. in its first week. In 2011, Deborah Cox released her 11th #1 single, “If It Wasn’t For Love”, right in the midst of her budding career on Broadway. Deborah Cox married her high school sweetheart Lascelles Stephens, who is also her songwriting partner and manager.
