Ellen Burstyn Bio

Academy Award-winning actress Ellen Burstyn, was born Edna Rae Gillooly on December 7th 1932 in Detroit, Michigan. Ellen first stepped onto the scene as a dancer on The Jackie Gleason Show using the name Erica Dean, and appeared on Broadway in Fair Game under the name Ellen McRae. Burstyn appeared in a string of projects including The Doctors and The Iron Horse, before she landed her breakthrough role in The Last Picture Show. Her performance scored her Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, as did her performance in The Exorcist. The talented actress showed no signs of slowing down, winning an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Burstyn also won a Golden Globe for her performance in Same Time, Next Year. Burstyn also scored a slew of Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for performances in Resurrection, The People vs. Jean Harris, and Requiem for a Dream. Her extensive resume includes roles in The Age of Adaline, House of Cards, American Woman, and Lucy in the Sky.
