Gilberto Gil Bio

Gilberto Passos Gil Moreira (popularly known as Gilberto Gil) is a Brazilian singer and songwriter who was born on June 26th 1942 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. His daughter, Preta Gil is also a musician.

Gilberto played for music groups like Yes, Pink Floyd and The Incredible String Band. He released a cover for Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry in 1980 and it was a big hit. The cover introduced reggae music to Brazil. He dropped the album Tropicália 2 in 1993 with Caetano Veloso, and it featured a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Wait Until Tomorrow. In January 2003, President Lula da Silva appointed Gil as Brazil’s Minister of Culture. He released the songs Refazenda, Rebento and Refavela while a minister.

Gil won the Polar Music Prize in 2005 in Stockholm Sweden and he was the first Latin American recipient. The award was conferred on him by the King of Sweden. In September the same year, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur by the French Government which coincided with the Année du Brésil en France (Brazil's Year in France).
