Jan Vertonghen Bio

Jan Bert Lieve Vertonghen is an outstanding Belgian professional footballer who currently plays for Benfica in the Primeira Liga and for the Belgium national team. He is mostly a center defender, although he can also play left-back. Born 24 April 1987, Vertonghen began his senior career in 2006 with Dutch club Ajax, where he played 220 games and scored 28 goals across all competitions while also serving as captain from 2011 to 2012. During his stint with the club, he won two Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups, and he was voted Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2012. He joined Tottenham Hotspur in July 2012 and was named to the PFA Team of the Year in his debut season in the Premier League. Over the course of eight years, he made 315 appearances for Spurs, winning the club's player of the year title in 2018. Vertonghen debuted for Belgium officially in 2007, and has 133 caps, which is the most in the national team's history. With him, Belgium finished fourth at the 2008 Olympics, advanced to the quarter-finals of both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2016, and finished third in the 2018 World Cup.
