Joan Armatrading Bio

Joan Armatrading is a singer and songwriter born on 9th December 1950 in England. At the age of 16, Joan performed in a concert at the University of Birmingham for her brother. In 1970, she met lyricist Pam Nestor, and they collaborated on her first album, “Whatever’s for Us,” which was released in 1972 under Cube Records. In 1975, she signed a recording contract with A&M Records and released the album “Back to the Night.”

The following year, she was able to release her self-titled album with the help of producer Glyn Johns. The album made it to the Top 20 and contained the Top-10 single “Love and Affection.” In 1980, she released the album “Me Myself I,” which became her highest-ever album on the UK and US charts. Five years later, she performed at a concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, United States. That same year, she dropped the album “Secret Secrets,” which was a Top-20 hit. In 1991, she released the compilation album “The Very Best of Joan Armatrading.” In 1996, she won the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection.
