Lea DeLaria is an American actress, comedian, and jazz singer born in Belleville, Illinois on May 23, 1958. She is best known for her role as Carrie “Big Boo” Black on the Netflix original show Orange is the New Black. She started her comedy career in 1982 and performed her stand-up in the Mission District in San Francisco, California. In 1993 she made her debut in a television show in the show In the Life and has since had roles in the shows Matlock, The John Larroquette Show, The Oblongs, The Job, Will & Grace, Californication, Orange is the New Black, Awkward, Broad City, Shameless and others. In 1994 she released her first comedy album titled Bulldyke in a Chinashop and in 1997 released her second comedy album titled Box Lunch. DeLaria has had roles in several theater productions like The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, The Rocky Horror Show, On the Town and more. In 1996 she made her debut in film in the movie Rescuing Desire and continued landing roles in the films The First Wives Club, Plump Fiction, Homo Heights, Edge of Seventeen and others. She released her debut jazz album in 2001 titled Play It Cool. Throughout her career she has been nominated for several awards and has won three Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Theatre World Award, and an Orlando Film Festival Award.
