Lily Tomlin Bio
Television actress Lily Tomlin, also known as Mary Jean Tomlin, was born in Detroit, Michigan, on September 1, 1939. She attended Wayne State University after completing her undergraduate studies at Cass Technical High School. Her stand-up comedy debut took place in New York and Detroit nightclubs. She made her on-screen debut on "The Merv Griffin Show." Her notable movies include Robert Altman's Nashville, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for her performance, 9 to 5, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, Robert Altman's Short Cuts, Tea with Mussolini, and Robert Altman's final movie, A Prairie Home Companion. The award-winning comedian rose to fame on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In as phone operator Ernestine. She made her film debut in “I Heart Huckabees” in 2004, and she debuted as Frankie in the Netflix series “Grace and Frankie” in 2015. She received numerous honours, including four Emmy Awards and a 1972 Grammy Award for “This Is A Recording” in the category of Best Comedy Album.
