Maggie Smith Bio

Maggie Smith is an English theater, television and movie actress. She was born Margaret Natalie Smith on the 28th of December, 1934, in Ilford, Essex, England. She studied acting at the Oxford University and in 1952, she began her career acting in the production “Twelfth Night” at the Oxford Playhouse. In 1954, she made her television debut in the show “Oxford Accents” and two years later she made her film debut appearing in “Child in the House”. She also made her Broadway debut in the same year. In 1957, she starred in the musical comedy “Share my Lettuce” alongside Kenneth Williams. In 1962, she won Best Actress Evening Standard Awards for her role in “The Private Ear and The Public Eye”. She would later win the same award 5 more times, for different productions. In 1958, she starred in the crime film “Nowhere to Go” for which she earned a nomination for a BAFTA. In 1969 she starred in the movie “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” for which she won Best Actress at the Academy Awards. She is also known for portraying Minerva McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” film series. In 2012, Smith received the Stratford Shakespeare Festival's Legacy Award.
