Michael Stipe, the lead singer of R.E.M. and a social and political activist, was born on January 4, 1960 in Decatur, Georgia, in the United States. R.E.M. is an alternative rock band. Stipe is the lead singer. Prior to enrolling at the University of Georgia, where he eventually became an art major, he had a job at a Waffle House. The songs "Losing my Religion," "Everybody Hurts," and "It's the End of the World as We Know it (And I Feel Fine)" brought him the fame he is known for today. Both of R.E.M.'s critically acclaimed studio albums, Automatic for the People (1992) and Out of Time (1994), feature his lyrical contributions in their entirety.
