Esteemed rapper, producer, singer-songwriter, and actor Mos Def has been ranked among the Top 50 MC’s of Our Time, and Top 50 Lyricists of All Time, by About.com and The Source, respectively. The Brooklyn-born Yaslin Bey began as a child actor in television movies, sitcoms, and theater, under the name Dante Beze. He acted into adulthood in feature films (Something the Lord Made, Next Day Air, The Italian Job) and a television show (Dexter), and was the host of Def Poetry Jam from 2002-2007. Mos Def appears on the albums of Kanye West (The College Dropout, G.O.O.D. Friday), The Roots (Rising Down), Gorillaz (Plastic Beach), and A$AP Rocky (At. Long. Last. ASAP). Mos Def is known for his advocacy in political issues including police brutality, Hurricane Katrina relief, and racism. After the release of his final untitled album in 2016, he announced his retirement from music and film.
