Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, popularly known as Shakira, is a Colombian singer, songwriter, dancer, producer, and model. She first achieved notoriety in the Latin-American community with the release of her major-label debut album, Pies Descalzos (1996). Her debut English-speaking album, Laundry Service (2001), released the single, ‘Whenever, Wherever,’ which quickly became the best-selling single of 2002. Subsequent successes include Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005), which featured the best-selling song of the twenty-first century, ‘Hips Don’t Lie;’ and Sale el Sol (2010). Shakira served as a coach on The Voice, and has received numerous awards, including five MTV Video Music Awards, two Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, and has a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture for ‘Despedida,’ in the film Love in the Time of Cholera (2007).
