Shekhar Kulbhushan Kapur, popularly known as Shekhar Kapur is a Bollywood actor, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and TV presenter. Born into the Anand-Sahni family on December 6, 1945, in Lahore, (modern-day Pakistan), Kapur has starred in several movies and is a recipient of many awards in his illustrious career. He became famous for his role in the TV series “Khandaan” and the Oscar-winning 1998 Hollywood film “Elizabeth.”
Kapur grew up in a Punjabi-Hindu family with his parents Kulbhushan and Sheel Kanta Kapur, and his sister Sohaila Kapur amid a turbulent period. He studied economics at St. Stephen’s College but graduated as a Chartered Accountant with the ICAEW in England. He worked as an accountant for years in the United Kingdom before venturing into the entertainment world.
The multi-talented personality made his acting debut in the 1975 movie “Jaan Haziri Hai '' and directorial debut with the 1983 drama film “Masoom,” a cult classic. While he hit prominence with the1987 sci-fi movie “Mr. India,” it was the 1994 film “Bandit Queen,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival that gained him international recognition.
The award-winning “Elizabeth” further elevated Kapur’s career, earning him BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. The Sequel “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” got two Oscar nominations and won a BAFTA. Kapur is the incumbent president of the Film and Television Institute of India.
