Sugar Ray Leonard Bio

Ray Charles Leonard was born on May 17, 1956, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, United States. He is a boxing hall of fame inductee. An Olympic gold medalist and held the World Boxing Council's welterweight title. He comes from humble beginnings and initially trained in the Palmer Park Community Center. In 1973 he won his first National Golden Glove title (he won it three times in his career), and following that won the National Amateur Athletic Union Championship. In 1976 he got his big break and became a household name when he brought home the gold medal in the Olympics. In 1979, he won the World Boxing Council's welterweight title. He enjoyed a stellar career, his win against the Marvelous Marvin Hagler goes down in history books as one of the greatest boxing matches ever. He retired in 1997 with an exceptional record of 36 wins in 40 matches.
