The Weeknd Bio
The Weekend is the stage name of the Canadian singer, songwriter, dancer, and record producer Abel Makkonen Tesfaye. He was born in Toronto, Canada on February 16, 1990 and currently resides in Hidden Hills, California. He started making music in 2010 and would anonymously upload several songs to YouTube under the name The Weekend. In 2011 he released the mixtapes, House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. He signed with Republic Records in 2012 in a joint venture with his own record label XO. That same year he released the compilation album Trilogy. The album charted at number 5 on the Canadian Albums chart, number 4 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, and charted in several other countries. It sold over 550k albums in the United States. In 2013 he released his debut studio album titled Kiss Land that charted at number 2 in on the Canadian Albums charts and the Billboard 200 Albums charts. He has since released the albums Beauty Behind the Madness and Starboy. The Weekend has been nominated for a number of awards and has won three Grammy Awards, nine Juno Awards, two American Music Awards and more. He also holds two Guinness World Records for Most Streamed Album on Spotify in One Year and Most Consecutive Weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 by a Solo Male Artist.
