Thomas Vermaelen Bio
Thomas Vermaelen (born November 14, 1985), is a former Belgian professional footballer known for his time as a left-footed center-back. He began his career in the Ajax youth academy in 2000, winning the Eredivisie title in his first season. After a loan spell with RKC Waalwijk, he returned to Ajax, winning the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield. He became club captain in 2009 after Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's departure.
In 2009, Vermaelen joined Arsenal and was included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. He became Arsenal's captain in 2012 but struggled with limited first-team opportunities. In 2014, he transferred to Barcelona.
Vermaelen's international career with Belgium began in 2006. He participated in the 2008 Olympics, 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups, and the UEFA European Championships in 2016 and 2021. He retired in 2021 and joined the Belgium national team as an assistant coach ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Throughout his career, Vermaelen was known for his aerial ability, leadership skills, and scoring ability as a defender.
