Willie Nelson Bio
Willie Nelson, also known as the Red Headed Stranger, is a Texas Country music icon from Abbott, TX. As a pivotal figure in the outlaw country genre, Willie Nelson has influenced scores of modern country musicians. Nelson has released over 60 studio albums beginning with 1962’s And Then I Wrote; his last album, 2014’s Band of Brothers, hit number 1 on the US Country charts. Nelson has been writing songs since the age of seven and performing since the age of 10. Some of Nelson’s songs which have become country standards include “Family Bible”, “Funny How Time Slips Away”, “Hello Walls”, and “Crazy”. He is most famous for the songs “On the Road Again”, “Beer for my Horses”, “He Was a Friend of Mine”, and “You Are Always on my Mind”. Nelson joined the Grand Ol Opry in 1965 and was part of the super group The Highwaymen alongside Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. Over ten of Nelson’s albums are certified Platinum at least once, many numerous times. In 1993, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Nelson has been awarded 11 Grammy awards, 7 AMA awards, and 9 CMA awards.
Nelson is a very vocal liberal who has publicly supported marijuana legalization and the use of biofuels; he co-heads the annual Farm Aid concert, which provides aid to family farmers. He has been the recipient of numerous humanitarian awards, such as the Kennedy Center Honors and the Feed the Peace award, and has been inducted into the National Agriculture Hall of Fame and the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. Nelson is also the author of seven books.
