He played baseball at Hillcrest High School in Alabama and East Central Community College in Mississippi. The Chicago White Sox selected him in the first round of the 2013 MLB draft.

Tim made his MLB debut on June 10, 2016. In 2018, the shortstop became the first shortstop in White Sox history to record 20-plus home runs and 20-plus stolen bases in a season. Tim was the American League (AL) Player of the Month for March/April 2019. He became the first White Sox to earn AL Player of the Month since teammate José Abreu and the first Sox middle infielder to earn the accolade.
